server and such
The server is - “THOR”
The server performs a bunch of functions… local file storage, printing and all related services on the LAN. It has 500 gigs of redundant RAID5 storage, and 2.6 TB on non redundant storage. All of my music, personal data, software, etc is kept on the redundant disks along with the boot drive, and the non redundant storage is used for copying my DVD collection to the drive for playback on other network devices.
All of the equipment on this page lives in a relay rack in my basement. Total power draw is about 250 watts continuous, and yes, I don’t need to heat the basement in the winter with this stuff running.
Asus P4C800D Mobo
Intel P4 3.0 gig, HT, 800 mhz bus
Corsair 3200 RAM 4x 1gi, 4 gigs total
4x 250 gig Seagate SATA drives on add-in PCI SIL 3114 RAID controller in RAID10 mode, 500 gigs useable space, striping and redundant
2x 450 gig Seagate SATA drives on the motherboard’s Promise RAID controller in RAID0 mode
2x 250 gig Western Digital PATA drives on the motherboard’s Promise RAID controller in RAID0 mode
1x Western Digital “green” 750gig HD on motherboard SATA controller (no raid)
1 500 gig Seagate SATA2 drive via USB in external enclosure (because I’m out of space!)
Matrox Millenium video card. Old and works.
Plextor DVD writer, SATA
Generic 4U rack mount server case (has room for 10 total drives internally)
ENERMAX Noisetaker Series 600W Power Supply
server is connected gigE
Network Hardware
Trentnet 8 port gig switch
Dlink gigabit gaming router
Linksys WRT54G wireless router running WRT aftermarket firmware for wireless only
Netgear draftN wireless router used for wireless only
Linksys VOIP box (not using it as a router)
Comcast 8 meg down, 768k up internet service
3 * APC450 UPS’s with various bits of equipment plugged in
an older pic of “NEO” (the old server), the rack, network gear and such
here is a link to a newer pic of everything. This is right after a move so it’s a bit of a mess.
Printing
HP Photosmart 5100, network based
HP Laserjet 5000N with PS and 11×17 tray addon, network based
Samsung CLP-300 color laser printer, hanging USB off the server (not my preferred config, but it works)
I used to use a Dell Perc controller and a big SCSI disk device with this server, but the noise, heat, and electrical consumption became an issue. This setup has been sold and I have switched to SATA internal drives instead. For my uses it is actually faster this way, and I’m saving about 220 watts of power 24×7 over the old setup.
